ASCLA Institute: Using Comics to Promote Literacy at All Levels [$] Preconference/Institute Hilton Chicago
Salon A
Description :

As many librarians, teachers, and parents will attest, kids LOVE comics. But in this era of high-stakes testing, comics aren't just a refreshing change of pace for students. Increasingly comics are taking on deep subjects and being used to teach the CCSS with an emphasis on both verbal and visual literacy. Making sense out of reading with the aid of visuals may be the best way to become a lifelong reader, one who knows how to read for pleasure and for information—a reader who loves to read. Join Françoise Mouly, art editor at The New Yorker (where she has been responsible for more than 1,000 covers) and editorial director of TOON Books, as she gathers famed cartoonists, including Gene Luen Yang, Ivan Brunetti and Lilli Carré to discuss the importance of visual literacy in our increasingly visual culture .

Two free TOON Books (with accompanying lesson plan/activity sheet) to every attendee!

Saturday Ignite Session: The Kids Are Not All White Forum/Update/Assembly McCormick Place West
W183a
Description :

Some 43% of Millennial adults are non-white and the U.S. Census Bureau projects that the full U.S. population will be majority non-white around 2043. Kidlit publishers do not reflect these population dynamics. Do library shelves and programs? All young readers need mirrors and windows that both reflect and open to the world around them. Library materials and programs are important in helping children make cross-cultural connections and developing skills necessary to function in a pluralistic society. Resources are readily available for librarians to meet these needs.
