OCLC Symposium and ARC Meeting McCormick Place West

The OCLC Symposium will feature Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President, OCLC Research and Chief Strategist, and Chrystie Hill, Director, OCLC Community Relations, who will discuss how research activities can move beyond insights into action. Research often starts by recognizing and mapping changes in the environment. but knowing where we are and how we got here is only half of the equation. For research to be valuable, it must also be actionable.

Roundtable discussion will follow, both live and online, about the ways in which research can help your library achieve greater impact and plan with confidence.

OCLC Maximizing Discovery and Access of Library eContent McCormick Place West
W187c
Description :

In a discovery environment, where access and relevance are paramount, problems and gaps in data consistency and delivery are becoming increasingly evident. To ensure libraries and service providers are drawing from the most relevant datasets possible, bibliographic metadata must be complete, accurate and structurally consistent to be properly and seamlessly ingested into disparate services, such as link resolvers, citation finders, etc. Unfortunately, breakdowns in our current processes and practices often impede the successful discovery of content by the user. The E-Data Quality Working Group—a cross-industry collaboration of academic libraries, publishers, aggregators and knowledge-based providers—has been addressing these workflow concerns in an effort to improve discovery and access. In this session, Suzanne Kemperman, Director of Business Development and Publisher Relations at OCLC, and Carlen Ruschoff, Director of Technical Services and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Maryland, explain the nature of the challenge and share recommendations from the working group to bridge the gaps. You'll learn: the identified source of the problem; how this problem impedes the success of the user in discovering and accessing desired content; gaps that must be bridged between suppliers of bibliographic and holdings data, and libraries and service providers; the benefits of stakeholders collaborating more closely to resolve issues; recommendations for improving data quality.
